4 Tips for Implementing Personalized Learning with Learning Arcs

Have you ever found yourself in a show hole, aimlessly scrolling from app to app without ever finding anything that piques your interest enough to press play? Well, back in 2000, Netflix noticed.

But instead of sending you an email reminding you of the thousands of streaming options at your fingertips, they developed their recommendation algorithm to give you easily accessible, tailored suggestions reflective of your behaviors and preferences.

Just like the Netflix recommendation algorithm interprets member data to reduce the user’s wasted time, frustration, and confusion so they can focus on great content, learning arcs use data from learner personas to determine what your employees are most interested in and how they learn best to design highly personalized learning pathways that feel intuitive, relevant, and motivating.

By now, we know that the one-size-fits-all learning methodology of decades past was stunted by a limited scope and even more limited outcomes. (To be honest, we probably knew back in 2000 too).

In fact, companies were spending an average of $1,280 per employee on learning and development, and only 12% of those employees were effectively applying the acquired skill to their roles (source). Those are not promising numbers.

But thanks to the Netflix effect, we finally know how to get the biggest bang for our buck. 93% of high-performing organizations credit personalized learning as a key tool in helping employees achieve their professional goals more efficiently, resulting in increased employee engagement (source).

Below, I’m sharing my 4 tips for effectively implementing learning arcs to promote personalized learning experiences and help learners achieve their goals.

4 Tips for Implementing Learning Arcs

  1. Start with the Outcomes: When designing a learning arc, define the learning outcomes you want your learners to achieve. This will help you design a sequence of learning experiences that are aligned with your learning goals.

  2. Use a variety of learning experiences: To keep learners engaged and motivated, use a variety of learning experiences that will keep your content feeling fresh and motivate your learners to participate. This could include online courses, webinars, podcasts, videos, and interactive activities.

  3. Monitor progress and provide feedback: Learning arcs are designed to help learners achieve specific learning outcomes. To ensure that learners are making progress, monitor their progress and provide regular feedback. This will help learners to stay on track, feel supported, and receive the positive recognition they deserve.

  4. Continuously evaluate and iterate: Learning arcs are not set in stone. They are designed to be flexible and adaptable. Continuously evaluate their effectiveness and make changes as needed so your programming remains relevant.

Personalization has proven its worth in everything from Netflix recommendations to Instagram ads. It’s time for L&D departments to embrace this revolution in the workplace too fully. With personalization as the driving force, learning arcs will lead to improved engagement, better knowledge retention, and, ultimately, more successful learning outcomes.
